1963 World History Of Science and Engineering
November 1, 1963: The Arecibo Observatory Opens:
the Arecibo Observatory, home of the world's largest single-dish radio
telescope. The telescope's spherical reflecting surface is 1000 feet in
diameter, 167 feet deep, and covers an area of approximately 20 acres.
The radio mirror's surface consists of 40,000 perforated aluminum
panels, each measuring 3 feet by 6 feet, and is
supported by a network of steel cables. A 900-ton triangular platform is
suspended 450 feet above the spherical reflector and supported by 18
cables connected to three reinforced concrete towers. Just beneath the
platform, a bow-shaped azimuth arm turns on a circular track. By aiming
a linear antenna at a specific point on the reflector, radio
transmissions from a specific area of the sky can be focused on the feed
antenna and its radio receivers. |
