Webmaster: I looked over the 1978 Prince Georges Areas Science Fair program and found fifteen of our students went on from St. Mary's to the Regional Fair.  I did not find John F. Iekel in the program so one must assume he was unable to compete.  What a shame maybe someone has the story the can tell us here.  In fact the only senior Division project listed was Kenneth T. Hammett from Ryken High School in Zoology with a project titled "Memory in Planaria."  The Junior Division was dominated by St John's School School students.  The following is an alphabetized list of students whose project were judged superior to go on to the regional fair at Price George's Community College April 15-16, 1978
Christi E. Clarke Junior Mathematics "A Voyage in Geometry" Esperanza Middle School
Linda M. Doering Junior Chemistry "The Effect of Detergent in Fabric" St. John's School
Colleen M. Enzmann Junior Medical Sciences "The Eye and How It Operates" St. John's School
Kenneth T. Hammett Senior Zoology "Memory in Planaria" Ryken High School
Cindy C. Henderson Junior Environmental And Space Sciences "Star Dates" St. John's School
Jon Hodges Junior Zoology "Insect Zoo" St. John's School
Annmari L. Ingersall Junior Environmental And Space Sciences "If We Can Save It, Why Make It?" Leonardtown Middle School
Barney H. Kable Junior Chemistry "Indi...gestion!!!" Lenard Hall School
Joanne K. Lynch Junior Physics "Solar Energy" St. John's School
John D. McKenney Junior Environmental And Space Sciences "Geysers" St. John's School
Dawn C. Nunziato Junior Physics "Pinhole Cameras" St. John's School
Douglas V. Russell Junior Engineering "Aerodynamics" Esperanza Middle School
Sharon M. Schlosser Junior Medical Sciences "Getting to the Tooth of the Matter" St. John's School

Although St. Mary did not win the Prince George's Area Science Fair cover design St. Mary's made a good showing. Charles Berry from Great Mills High School can in second, Jeffrey Hidalgo from Great Mills came in Third and Mary Owens from Great Mills got an Honorable Mention.

1978 World History Of Science and Engineering

On the basis of the findings of Min Chueh Chang's application of in vitro fertilisation to animals, the technique was developed for humans in the United Kingdom by Patrick Steptoe and Robert Edwards.  On July 25th, 1978, Drs. Robert Edwards and Patrick Steptoe deliver the world’s first test tube baby. Louise Brown is the daughter of Lesley and John, a couple from Bristol, England, who have been trying to conceive for nine years. Their miraculous success gives hope to millions of infertile couples but arouses deep concern in others
A Bulletin board system, or BBS, is born.

A BBS is computer system running software that allows users to dial into the system over a phone line (or Telnet) and, using a terminal program, perform functions such as downloading software and data, uploading data, reading news, and exchanging messages with other users. According to an early interview, while he was snowed in during the Great Blizzard of 1978 in Chicago, Ward Christensen began preliminary work on the Computerized Bulletin Board System, or CBBS CBBS went online on February 16, 1978 in Chicago, Illinois, and was the first of its kind. With the original 110 and 300 baud modems of the late 1970s, BBSes were particularly slow
