The
Fair was held at St. Mary's College in the Montgomery Arts Center.
Dr. Edward T. Lewis was Priesident of St. Mary's College at the time.
The cover was designed by Craig Intinarelli of St Mary's Rykan High
School. He won the Science Fair's poster contest. George
Lindsey of Great Mills High School was 2nd and Lorri Blaylock of Great
Mills High School was 3rd and Ronald Strickland and Suzanne Haugue both
of Great Mills High School were Honorable Mentions. |

Webmaster: I looked over the 1988 Prince Georges Areas
Science Fair program and found twenty-eight of our students went on from
St. Mary's to the Regional Fair. All of the Senior Division
projects came from Chopticon High School while the Junior Division was
dominated by Mother Catherine Spalding School students. The
following is an alphabetized list of students whose project were judged
superior to go on to the regional fair at Price George's Community

1988 World History Of Science and Engineering
In
1988 the Frenchman Albert Fert and the German Peter Grünberg each
independently discovered a totally new physical effect – Giant
Magnetoresistance or GMR. Very weak magnetic changes give rise to major
differences in electrical resistance in a GMR system. A system of this
kind is the perfect tool for reading data from hard disks when
information registered magnetically has to be converted to electric
current. Soon researchers and engineers began work to enable use of the
effect in read-out heads. This work led to the hard drives in all of our
computer today and earned them the Nobel Prize in Physics for 2007. |
