Before 1962 St. Marys County did not have it's
own science fair but did participate in the Prince Georges Area Science Fair (PGASF).
The first PGASF that I have been able to find students from St. Marys county
participating is the 1960 fair. At that fair Lenardtown High School sent four
students. They were, in the category of Physics, Kriss Nielson with a project
titled "Principle of Nuclear Chain and Its Application", Michael Robertson with
a project titled "The Spectroscope" and in the category of Zoology, Margaret
Burch competed with a project titled "What Birds Sing About" and Richard Hayden
with a project titled "Embryology of a Chicken." I don't know how well they did
at the fair.
Just four months after that fair on August 12, 1960 the Russians launched
Sputnik, the first satellite to orbit the Earth. The United States had a
resurgence of interest in science and engineering. The Space Race was on and so
too was the participation in science fairs across the country. At the April 1961
PGASF Leonardtown High School sent seven students and Great Mills High school
sent three students. The St. Marys County Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Robert
King, Jr. also went to announce the Junior High Division awards. Here is the St.
Marys Team that went to that fair:
Senior Division in the category of Botany
George Clark III from Leonardtown High School exhibited a project titled
"Environmental Factors That Influence the Kind and Concentration of Bacteria in
Air"
Kris Neilson from Leonardtown High School exhibited a project titled
"Environmental Conditions That Cause Rapid Growth of Algae for Production as a
Food"
Linda Perkins from Leonardtown High School exhibited a project titled "Nature
Under Glass"
Junior Division in the category Botany
Sandra Bee from Great Mills High School exhibited a project titled "A Forest
Terrarium"
Gary White from Great Mills High School exhibited a project titled "The Effect
of Sugar on the Development of Lettuce Seeds"
Linda Dunklee from Great Mills High School exhibited a project titled "The Study
of Plant and Animal Growth"
Senior Division in the category of Architecture and Planning
Earl Lee from Leonardtown High School exhibited a project titled "The Progress
of Man as Shown Through Architecture"
Senior Division in the category of Medical Sciences
Sharon Cryer from Leonardtown High School exhibited a project titled "The Rate
of Development of Intelligence of a Retarded Child"
Senior Division in the category of Zoology
Mary Dean from Leonardtown High School exhibited a project titled "Similarities
Between Man and Mouse as Shown Through Reactions to Stimuli"
James Mandel from Leonardtown High School exhibited a project titled "Light
Sensitivities of the Earthworm"
Again I don't know how well they did at the fair. This information came from the
PGASF program booklets I have been scanning for the 60th annual PGASF. If anyone
has more information please send it along.
